An Idea to Keep in Mind
Why Off-the-Shelf Signage Rarely Delivers.
Imagine a high-end boutique hotel is preparing for its opening. Months have been spent designing the interiors, bringing to life a seamless guest experience.
A few days before launch the signage arrives. But something instantly feels wrong. The materials clash with the décor, the typography is completely off-brand, and worst of all the room numbers are too small to read.
Everyone thinks it has to be a mistake. Nothing about the signage is functional, inspiring, or complementary. It feels like an afterthought. Unfortunately, there is no mistake, and it is an afterthought. Under pressure, the owner took a shortcut, and assuming signage wouldn’t matter they ordered off-the-shelf signs from the internet.
Now, they have two options available:
Install the signs as they are.
Start the process from scratch.
Neither is ideal…
This isn’t the first, or the last time this will ever happen. While off-the-shelf solutions have their place, more often than not they won’t deliver the expected results. The appeal of a quick, cost-effective solution is tempting; but at what expense?
If the signage doesn’t match the brand, complement the design of the space, or work functionally; it actively makes things worse.
Now imagine a different approach. Instead of being treated as an afterthought, the signage has been considered from day one. It’s been integrated into the design, tailored to the brand and space.
Materials that complement, not clash.
Typography that is clear, and on-brand.
Intuitive wayfinding that enhances the experience.
Real-world testing to ensure everything works.
Of course, this process takes longer. Yet the results speak for themselves.
Every sign feels like it belongs to the hotel, it adds value rather than taking it away.
That’s the thing everyone involved in a project like this should understand.
Signage isn’t just about sticking a panel bought from the internet up on the wall. It has to be a considered, intentional solution tailored to the space and goals.
Signage has the power to shape experiences and define places.
The consequences of getting it wrong are costly.
The benefits of getting it right are priceless.
